The end of the 19th century brings great change to Britain, the Empire continues to grow and India is known as a great source of wealth.  London bustles with old and new money, rich and poor, friendly faces and strangers from all over the world.  Times are a changing: women will soon start to fight for the right to vote, World War is no longer a distant fear and travelling to the far corners of the earth is less of an impossible dream.  In the midst of these whirling times, enter Sara Crewe, a young lady with the wisdom and grace of a woman beyond that of many of her peers.  Her arrival at Miss Minchin's Academy is a welcome ray of sunshine to those who have been downtrodden for most of their young lives.
