Whistle Down the Wind

The story takes place on the Bostock's Farm. It is December in the late 1950s.
The Bostock children, Cathy, Nan and Charles see Eddie, a farm labourer, drop a sack of kittens into the canal. They manage to rescue them but are unable to find them homes and decide to keep them secretly in the barn.
Although the Salvation Army Lady was unable to help them, they cling to her words "Jesus will".
When Cathy disturbs a man who was sheltering in the barn and he utters, "Jesus Christ!", she mistakenly thinks that her prayers have been answered.
